A Lago di Braies elopement is one of the most iconic ways to experience the Dolomites, especially for couples wanting a wedding day that feels intimate, scenic, and connected to nature. Nestled in Northern Italy, Lago di Braies is known for its deep blue water, dramatic mountain backdrop, and the historic wooden boathouse that sits along the edge of the lake.
Charnelle and Joe traveled from the Midwest to the Dolomites for a small Halloween adventure elopement surrounded by a few of their closest friends. As an adventure elopement photographer, I love helping couples create intentional experiences in new places. This day at Lago di Braies was so special!
Planning Their Dolomites Elopement
When Charnelle and Joe first reached out, they knew they wanted to elope somewhere in Northern Italy but were still deciding on the exact location. Together, we narrowed down a few options before ultimately landing on Lago di Braies in the Dolomites.
The boathouse immediately stood out as the perfect fit for the kind of atmosphere they were drawn to. They wanted quiet, scenic, and intimate while still feeling adventurous. One important thing to know about planning a Lago di Braies elopement is that ceremony reservations at the boathouse book very quickly, especially during peak seasons. They reserved their spot well in advance to secure the timing they wanted for their wedding day.
From there, we built the timeline around the experience they envisioned rather than trying to rush through the day. We planned time for their ceremony at the lake, moments to explore via boat together, a champagne celebration with friends, and an afternoon exploring Burg Reifenstein, a nearby castle tucked into the mountains.
Why Lago di Braies is Such a Beautiful Elopement Location
Lago di Braies is one of the most recognizable locations in the Dolomites for good reason. The lake has an almost unreal blue color, surrounded by dramatic alpine peaks that reflect across the water throughout the day.
The wooden rowboats are one of the most unique parts of the experience. During the warmer months, couples can rent boats from the boathouse and spend time out on the lake, which adds such a cinematic and personal element to the day. Charnelle and Joe included a boat ride after their ceremony, and it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the entire elopement.
Another thing I love about Lago di Braies is how accessible it is while still feeling immersive once you arrive. There are well-marked, paved roads and nearby parking lots that make it easy to access, and there’s also a hiking trail that loops around the lake if you want to spend more time exploring the area during your Dolomites elopement.
A Quiet Morning at the Boathouse
The morning at Lago di Braies was calm and relaxed from the very beginning. Charnelle and Joe shared a sweet first look near the lake before meeting with their small group of friends for the ceremony.
The boathouse and surrounding mountains created such a beautiful backdrop for their vows. They exchanged handwritten letters and kept the ceremony simple and intentional. They really wanted to focus more on the experience of being together than creating something overly elaborate.
Afterward, we spent time walking along the shoreline and exploring the lake together. The weather was soft and overcast, which gave the entire morning a moodier atmosphere that fit the landscape perfectly.
One of my favorite moments from the day was watching Charnelle and Joe out on the wooden boats together. The stillness of the water, the mountains surrounding the lake, and the slower pace of the morning were absolutely perfect.
Exploring Burg Reifenstein After Their Ceremony
After celebrating with a small bottle of champagne near the lake, we drove to Burg Reifenstein to continue exploring and taking portraits throughout the castle grounds.
The contrast between the lake and the castle made the day feel even more dynamic. After spending the morning surrounded by open water and mountains, the stone architecture and quieter atmosphere of the castle added a completely different energy to the second half of the elopement.
I always love building variety into elopements like this. It allows the time and space for different moments, environments, and pacing throughout the celebration.
Your Lago di Braies Elopement Photographer
Charnelle and Joe’s Lago di Braies elopement felt so intentional and natural. From the handwritten vows at the boathouse to exploring the lake by wooden boat and ending the day at Burg Reifenstein, every part of the day reflected them in such an honest way.
Helping them narrow down locations, build a timeline, and shape the flow of the day together was such a meaningful part of the process for me. I always want my couples to feel supported in creating their elopement experience.
